The House of Representatives passed a temporary federal funding package on Tuesday, effectively averting a potential government shutdown right before the upcoming election season. The stopgap measure extends government operations through Dec. 11, giving lawmakers additional time to negotiate full-year appropriations while keeping key federal programs and agencies running without disruption.

Passed under a fast-track procedure requiring a two-thirds majority, the legislation cleared the chamber in a bipartisan 370-48 vote, with 19 Republicans and 29 Democrats voting against it. The decision follows earlier action by the Senate, where lawmakers approved the modified resolution with broad bipartisan backing. The bill now heads to the president’s desk for signature ahead of the end-of-fiscal-year deadline.

The compromise version incorporated several revisions negotiated in the Senate to secure Democratic backing. Among these were restrictions on funding transfers to Border Patrol and a temporary delay on a proposed executive rule regarding federal grant distribution. Commenting on the delayed grant guidance, Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut stated, “Whether a community receives disaster relief should not depend on who they voted for in the last election”.

Leaders from both political parties expressed a strong desire to eliminate the risk of federal closures as voters prepare to head to the polls. Bypassing contentious debate over full-year spending priorities was viewed as essential to preventing political brinkmanship. Addressing reporters ahead of the vote, Speaker Mike Johnson stated, “The first thing is we’ve got to make sure this government gets funded and we don’t have another Democratic shutdown”.

With temporary funding established, lawmakers must now turn toward resolving broader disagreements over long-term spending caps. Republican leaders continue pushing for increased defense spending paired with cuts to non-defense programs, while Democrats maintain that domestic programs must receive parity. Negotiators will resume deliberations after the election to craft full-year appropriations before the new December deadline expires.
