A state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100, is held on Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden, who will eulogize Carter at the funeral, has directed that Jan. 9 be a national day of mourning. After the funeral service, Carter’s remains will travel back to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service and interment at the Carter residence. Prior to interment, the U.S. Navy will conduct a missing man formation flyover to honor Carter’s service in the Navy and his time as commander-in-chief.
