Free-agent pitcher Aroldis Chapman agrees to one-year, $10.7M deal with Boston Red Sox

Free agent pitcher Aroldis Chapman announced he has signed a one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox. Chapman posted a photo of himself wearing a Red Sox hat on social media pages with the caption: “Let’s go!”

Sources told ESPN that Chapman’s one-year deal with the Red Sox is worth $10.75 million, pending the completion of a physical. Chapman, who turns 37 before the coming season, went 5-5 with a 3.79 ERA and logged 14 saves over 68 appearances last season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Red Sox went 81-81 and failed to make the playoffs for the third-consecutive season in 2024, with their bullpen posting the seventh-worst ERA (4.39) in the MLB last season.

The left-handed pitcher began his career with the Cincinnati Reds and also played for the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. He earned Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year honors in 2019, posting a 2.21 ERA and earned 37 saves over 60 appearances for the Yankees that season. In 2023, the seven-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner splitthe season between the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.  Over 796 appearances, Chapman holds a 55-45 record, with 335 saves and a 2.63 ERA.
